Egypt cannot be censored into unity
The ugly face of military fascism continues to show in Egypt, and if recent happenings are any indicator, the trend shows little sign of reversing. As reported in Al Arabiya, at least three Egyptians have been tried in military court since Morsi was deposed in July resulting in two suspended six-month jail sentences and another …

Football and autocracy: Who do national football teams represent?
By James M. Dorsey Little better illustrates the inextricable link between sports and politics than the frequent perception of Middle Eastern and North African national football teams as representatives of repressive autocratic regimes. That perception is reinforced by players’ adoption of a neo-patriarchic acceptance of their autocratic leader as a father figure that leads them …
In Pictures: Sisi supporters face off with Bassem Youssef’s supporters
Pro-army protesters faced-off with supporters of political satirist Bassem Youssef on Wednesday in downtown Cairo while Youssef was filming the second episode of his show ‘Al-Bernameg’s third season in Radio Theatre. A protest against Youssef was planned ahead due to some viewers’ displeasure with the satirist’s previous episode. Youssef is being investigated by prosecutor general Hisham Barakat, according to multiple media sources including Reuters. The political satirist created controversy last Friday when he took jabs at the cult of personality surrounding commander of the armed forces Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, Islamists, and the low profile of interim president Adly Monsour.

General Sisi is no saviour for Egypt’s non-Islamists
By Nervana Mahmoud Quick glances at the events that lead to the 30 June protests and the subsequent army take-over on 3 July are enough for any observer to understand that Sisi’s success resulted mainly in his ability to garner a wide coalition against the Muslim Brotherhood. This support included a wide section of the …

On popularity and bubbles
Stories by foreign journalists on Egypt usually come in themes. One period it’s all about sexual harassment, the other it’s all about Egypt’s very bad liberals, and currently it’s all about the Sisi Personality cult. Articles probing all sides of the “story”, from the cult’s prevalence to what it means to the role of the …

The Evolution of Tamarod
By Nicholas Gjorvad Early last May, Tamarod was merely a small, upstart group created by a handful of rather unknown youth activists. Two months later, the campaign was known throughout Egypt, the Middle East, and the world. The original goal of this campaign was simple: force Mohamed Morsi to resign as President of Egypt. The …

Where will the hidden struggle lead between Egypt’s democracy supporters and members of the old regime?
It is no longer a secret that the removal of the Muslim Brotherhood came as the result of an unannounced, strategic partnership between Egypt’s democracy forces and supporters of the old regime, (i.e. supporters of Hosni Mubarak, Gamal Abd el-Nasser and Muhammed Ali). This partnership did not possess long term goals, as those from the …

By Nervana Mahmoud October 6, 1981 _____ the distance between my home and the bakery was no more than a few hundred metres, yet it felt like an endless journey. For three years, Egyptians have been taking to the streets demanding democracy, social justice and freedom, and for three years they have been denied. Culling youth
Egypt haemorrhages. Stretcher-bearers bus bodies, fallen replaced. Helicopters swoop and hover. Tormented faces agonise. None dares call it outright civil war; just as none want to admit a coup is a coup. The memory of happier times scurrying across Tahrir Square for a bite to eat or taking in a movie in Heliopolis is fading. …
