Art & Culture: a year in review (part 1)

Egypt’s Art&Culture scene flourished in 2012. From music, contemporary dance to photography, festivals and exhibitions of paintings, the underground scene grew exponentially.
Many artists quote the revolution as their inspiration and controversial subject matters were seen more than ever before. Artists in Egypt have become more outspoken and the diversity in their work made for a vibrant, surprising and entertaining year. Here are some of our highlights of 2012.

Underground music protest

The protest lasted until 5.30pm, when a committee from the union and Mohamed El Sawy came to talk to the protestors. “We then went inside the River Hall where we held a discussion where everyone could have their questions answered. The union proposed a few measures to help underground musicians integrate within its system,” said Ismael.

ArtBeat Festival: A cultural meeting point

The band was astonished by the Mansoura audience, who sang along with the German lyrics, without understanding what they were saying. “The audience was the best public I have ever played for,” said Max Gaier, vocalist.

Jazz Mate: enhancing the music scene in Egypt

Pictures of icons hanging on a brick wall, sentimental tunes playing in the background, and a TV playing jazz concerts or documentaries complete the setting of JazzMate. The venue will have performances every Friday, although Mustafa said that they are seeking to host live music on a more frequent basis.

Black Lips and Lazzy Lung rock out in Cairo

Their set was very well received by the crowd at Cairo Jazz, who may have gotten a little bit too rowdy towards the end, staying true to punk standards. The band sounded great but some of the subtleties of their music got lost in the venue’s acoustics and sometimes instrument separation was a lost cause.

Fareeq Al-Atrash delivers a fresh sound in Cairo

We are very locally minded and coming to Egypt was a big dream for us. The Arab world and culture are our primary focus and a big part of that is obviously the language. Fortunately, Arabic is a poetic language and people here are used to oration.
