Head of the plan and budget committee in the parliament, Abdel Monem Emam, has criticized the Ministry of Environment’s “weak performance”.

 

He said during a plenary session, in the presence of Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad: “I tried to be objective. The official page of the Ministry of Environment issued 116 publications over three months, including 100 seminars and events, and only 15 on-ground campaigns.

 

Emam pointed out that South Africa obtained $8.5bn grants to support state efforts to confront global warming.

 

Meanwhile, Egypt received only a $70m grant from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), directed to four governorates. However, nothing has changed on the ground, pointing out that millions of dollars were spent on salaries for consultants, said Emam.

 

MP Mahmoud Abu al-Khair, deputy of the health affairs parliamentary committee, said: “The Egyptian people do not know the name of the Environment Minister,” adding, “Ministers should work on the ground not in offices.”

 

Abu al-Khair criticized the ministry’s performance, saying: “The ministry has not introduced any out-of-box solutions.”
