Egypt re-nominates Aboul Gheit as Arab League Secretary-General

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi asks Arab leaders to support nomination of Aboul Gheit s Secretary-General of the Arab League

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has expressed his country’s intention to re-nominate Ahmed Aboul Gheit as Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL) for a second term of five years.

Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady said the President had sent messages to Arab leaders to confirm Egypt’s re-nomination of Aboul Gheit for the post. In the messages, President Al-Sisi asked his fellow Arab leaders to lend their support to the nomination, in accordance with the provisions of the League’s charter.

Rady said that Aboul Gheit’s re-nomination comes as part of Egypt’s great interest, under President Al-Sisi’s leadership, which it attaches to the Arab League’s work.

He also said that the President’s keenness is to provide all possible support for the Arab League. He added that, under the organisation’s auspices, Arab countries meet and embody their aspirations for joint cooperation to achieve the interests of their peoples.

Rady noted that Aboul Gheit’s first term as Secretary General was characterised by conscious and wise management at the helm of the joint Arab action system. This came as the region faced many challenges.
