UN Security Council to hold urgent session on Beirut explosion

Session scheduled for Monday will discuss explosions’ impacts on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, among other topics

The UN Security Council will, at the request of several Arab states, hold an emergency session on Monday to discuss the implications of the huge explosion in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The Security Council is set to discuss the impact of the explosions on UN peacekeepers operating in Lebanon, as well the repercussions on the country as a whole.

On Tuesday, the city was rocked by two huge explosions at the city’s port, leaving at least 100 dead and nearly 4,000 wounded. Tens of people remain missing as many buildings collapsed due to the explosions, with urgent rescue efforts occurring amongst the rubble.

The explosions, which were caused by the improper storage of 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse, caused severe damage to buildings spanning several kilometres from the incident’s epicentre.

The Lebanese High Defense Council declared Beirut a disaster zone, and imposed a State of Emergency in the city for two weeks.
