Egypt’s security forces have arrested six members of the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group over spreading rumors, according to a statement by the Ministry of Interior on Thursday.

The defendants are accused of fabricating false information with the aim to cause confusion among citizens ahead the Senate elections scheduled for early August.

According to the ministry’s statement, the suspects circulated fake news about the internal situation and state institutions of the country via social media platforms and Brotherhood satellite channels broadcasting from abroad.

The ministry further noted that “the forces seized numerous cameras, computers, video editing and photography tools in possession of the arrested which they used to produce misleading videos about the country.”

Legal measures have been taken, and the Supreme State Security Prosecution has opened investigation into the case.

The ministry affirmed that it will continue to address decisively any attempts to cause public confusion or undermine the country’s stability, the statement read.
