Egypt to hold next parliamentary election in November 2020

Parliament is on three-week vacation, but may run extraordinary session to discuss possible cabinet reshuffle

Egypt’s Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal said on Saturday that Egypt’s parliamentary elections will be held in November 2020.

During the session, Abdel Aal explained that the current parliament will conclude on 9 January and will hold elections to form a new parliament. The election will be held within 60 days preceding 9 January 2021. This means that elections shall be held in November 2020.

He previously stated in a session on 19 November that in accordance to the Constitution, the parliament should run a period of five years, the current parliament began its work on 9 January 2016, and will end on 9 January 2021.

Egypt is expected to see several general elections in 2020, including the House of Representatives, the Senate, and local city councils.

The session witnessed discussions of a report, titled “the harvest of last week’s meetings,” issued by Egypt’s parliament on the meetings of last week.

Saturday’s session is the last before parliament’s three-week vacation as decided by Abdel Aal last week. However, Abdel Aal said that the parliament may hold an extraordinary meeting within the coming two weeks, most probably to discuss an anticipated cabinet reshuffle. He also criticised, “the poor performance of some cabinet ministers.”
