Egypt’s Parliament to form counterterrorism committee

Abdel Aal urged that fighting terrorism should not be confined to armed struggle but also include cultural, social, and media elements

Egypt’s Speaker of the House of Representatives Ali Abdel Aal proposed the formation of a committee to be concerned with countering terrorism, extremism, and hate speech.

He said the proposed committee will be assigned to send early warning signals on the return of foreign fighters and sleeper cells on Sunday during the morning session.

The Egyptian government should raise the alarm on foreign fighters, who are currently involved in wars against the governments and national armies of Iraq, Syria, and Libya, Abdel Aal said.

The return of terrorists to their homelands represents a threat as they tend to form sleeper cells that could recruit new elements, Abdel Aal warned, saying the world is facing terrorism in all its aspects; whether cultural, economic, or social.

“These foreign fighters, who are members of IS or other terrorist groups, could come back home or move to other fronts, and the government should be ready to protect the country against this phenomenon,” said Abdel Aal.

Abdel Aal urged that fighting terrorism and terrorists should not be confined to armed struggle but also include cultural, social and media elements to raise the population’s awareness of this dangerous phenomenon. “I mean that all government authorities should prepare from now and join shoulders to safeguard the country from this big threat,” he said.
