Egypt’s Interior Ministry arrested on Tuesday 54 suspected Muslim Brotherhood’s members who are accused of planning to launch potential aggressive attacks in parallel with the eighth anniversary of the January 25 Revolution, according to the ministry’s statement.

The National Security Apparatus received intelligence that the suspects were planning to launch subversive activities during January and February this year, with the aim of terrorising citizens, spreading chaos inside the country, and harming the public security and peace, the ministry stated.

The suspects, headed by some of the group’s leaders who escaped in foreign lands, used the internet to recruit new followers and incite violent demonstrations, the statement continued.

Furthermore, money, weapons and arms were confiscated, according to the ministry.

Earlier this week, the Egyptian armed forces announced the killing of two suspected senior leaders of the Islamic State terrorist group in North Sinai in an army airstrike.

The military said the recent strike followed certain intelligence over the gathering of a number of terrorists and their leaders in a hideout.
