The Egyptian Court of Urgent Affairs nullified on Saturday the Supreme Administrative Court ruling suspending operations of the ride-hailing companies Uber and Careem inside the country.

The Administrative Court ordered on 20 March the suspension of operations of US-based Uber and UAE-based Careem after 42 taxi drivers sought a year ago to shut down the two companies’ operations, accusing them of “illegally operating” in Egypt.

This comes while the Egyptian parliament is discussing a draft law, referred by the cabinet last month, to regulate the operations of ride-hailing companies inside the country. The draft law was approved by members of the transport, communications, national security, and economic affairs committees in a session attended by Careem and Uber representatives. However, some articles of the draft law had not been welcomed by both companies’ representatives, as they constitute them an “invasion of users’ privacy”.
