UN General Assembly to vote on Jerusalem resolution in emergency session after US veto

Arab representatives at UN hope to override US veto with two-third vote at UN General Assembly

At the request of Arab and Muslim states, the UN General Assembly will hold a special emergency session on Thursday to vote on the UN Security Council draft resolution that outlaws any unilateral decision regarding the status of Jerusalem, following the US veto on Monday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly expressed his support for the representatives’ plans to invoke UN Resolution 377, known as “Uniting for Peace” resolution, to counter the US veto. According to that resolution, the assembly can hold an emergency session, in which two-thirds of member states in favour of a resolution can override a veto.

Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the UN, The Guardian reporter, addressed UN delegations in a letter, warning them of voting against the US decision on Jerusalem. She said the matter will be taken by the US president “personally”.
