Kuwait orders North Korea’s ambassador to exit

Decision came as a response to North Korea’s nuclear tests

In the midst of a global backlash to North Korea’s recent nuclear test—the largest ever recorded in the country—Kuwait is seeking to diminish its diplomatic relations by ordering North Korea’s ambassador to leave.

The unnamed ambassador has until the end of the month to depart from the Gulf country, which would place Kuwait’s diplomatic relationship with North Korea at a charge d‘affaires level.

Earlier this month at the United Nations’s (UN) general assembly meeting, US President Donald Trump urged countries to sever their political and diplomatic ties with North Korea. The UN placed sanctions on North Korea, to which a spokesperson for the country called it “the most vicious, unethical, and inhumane act of hostility to physically exterminate the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” according to the Korean Central News Agency.

Trump has previously threatened to use military action if North Korea continues its nuclear vendetta, but, according to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the US is still seeking a peaceful solution. In the meantime, diplomatic decisions like Kuwait’s are meant to serve the UN’s ultimate goal.
