Egypt concerned about ‘partisan’ US senate foreign aid hearing

Foreign ministry’s spokesperson says hearing ignored achievements of Egypt in region and in counter terrorism

According to a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Ministry criticized on Thursday the US senate’s hearings that aimed to present an assessment of the financial aid presented to Egypt from the United States. Speakers in the hearings pointed out alleged human rights violations in Egypt, an issue which the foreign ministry considered as “partisan” and an intentional act of negatively interpreting the situation.

The Egyptian Foreign Affairs Ministry said that “any close observer to the opinions of a number of former American officials towards Egypt” will conclude that the hearings were initiated to harm the positive relations between Egypt and the new American government.

The hearings took place Tuesday, where American researcher Michele Dunne, former US ambassador to Egypt Daniel Kurtzer, and former US state department official Dennis Ross were questioned by senators about the continuation or suspension of aid to Egypt. Opinions varied, with a state of polarization overwhelming the views of the senators.

Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zaid said that the three questioned had the same critical tendencies towards the Egyptian government, adding that they ignored “the country’s achievements in supporting stability and fighting terrorism.”
