State Council officially rejects judicial law on grounds of separation of powers

The draft law had sparked controversy among judges

The State Council declared Saturday its official rejection of a draft law presented by parliament on the appointment of judicial authorities, also known as the Judicial Authority Law.

The law, which would allow for the executive authority to designate the heads of main courts and judicial institutions, was widely rejected by judges and some members of parliament.

In a report addressing the parliament speaker, Ali Abdul Aal, published in local media on Saturday, the State Council said that the draft law, which enables the president of the country to be on top of judicial institutions, violates the principle of separation of powers.

The council said that the draft law could be unconstitutional, especially in light of its preparation without consultation of judges, as stated in the constitution.
