Detainee Islam Khalil granted release after 442 days of pretrial detention

The court decided to release Khalil on bail of EGP 50,000

The East Alexandria Court granted a release on Sunday detainee Islam Khalil after he spent over one year in pretrial detention on bail of EGP 50,000, according to his brother Nour Khalil.

Khalil was accused of belonging to an outlawed group and inciting violence targeting state stability and security.

His lawyers demanded the court release him due to the absence of any evidence proving his conviction and his deteriorating health, his brother noted.

Khalil, 27, was arrested on 24 May 2015 at around 3am from his home with his brother Nour and their father. They were taken to an unknown destination after being blindfolding.

Khalil’s brother was released after three days without appearing before prosecution authorities for official investigations. His father, a 56-year-old retired army officer, was released on 6 June.

However, Khalil had remained detained in an unknown place for over 122 days until he appeared in East Alexandria Court on 24 September 2015.

He has faced several renewal detention sessions since his referral to prison, and has suffered from poor health conditions throughout his detention period.

According to his pervious letters from prison, he was subjected to torture and went on hunger strike several times in opposition to the poor conditions in detention.
