Civilians detain police officer after man shot dead in Mansoura

Police says victim was shot “mistakenly” as security forces were chasing a suspect

A group of civilians in Daqahleya, Mansoura, briefly detained a police officer Sunday after security forces, who were chasing a suspect, killed a civilian and injured another.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, security forces were en route to arrest a man named Hani on charges of stealing tools from a weaving factory. To prevent the arrest, civilians attacked the security personnel, who responded by opening fire at them, the statement read. One civilian was killed, while another was injured.

Following the incident, an angry mob detained one of the police officers, requesting that the prosecution investigate the incident. The officer was released some hours later after the intervention of high-ranking security officers and the Armed Forces.

The prosecution is investigating the case and a forensics team will examine the body of the victim.

Two members of parliament visited the city to open negotiations between the civilians and the police, according to eyewitness reports.

Before the release of the officer, three trucks from the Central Security Forces (CSF) surrounded the village.
