Al-Mansoura Misdemeanour Court sentenced three people to five years in prison on Sunday for illegally protesting during the ‘Friday for land’ protests that took place on 15 April.

The protests were mounted against the maritime demarcation agreement that aimed to transfer sovereignty of the Tiran and Sanafir islands to Saudi Arabia.

Protestors are required to pay a fine of EGP 100, according to the Brave for Freedom Facebook page.

The controversial agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia was made in April, during a visit by Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. It sparked widespread discontent among both pro- and anti-government factions in the country, subsequently leading to several arrests.

According to numerous testimonies, the protests that took place on 15 April and 25 April were met with a strong security presence, followed by the arbitrary arrest and imprisonment of bystanders.

Dozens of other defendants are facing similar charges, including committing violence, spreading false news, and illegal protesting. Several of them have been acquitted on bail worth thousands of Egyptian pounds, while others are still detained pending trial.
