Giza court hands prison sentences to terrorist group defendants

Court orders eight defendants to spend life in prison, seven to 10 years, and six others to five years

The Giza Criminal Court ordered several members of the ”Al-Rasd Wel Ra’aad” terrorist group to serve harsh prison sentences.

The court handed life sentences to eight defendants, 10-year prison sentences to seven defendants, and five-year prison sentences to six defendants on accusations of belonging to a terrorist group.

The prosecution accused the defendants of setting off bombs in several areas across Cairo, and accused the group of having bombed the area in front Radobis cinema located in Al-Haram district. The incident killed a Coptic man and injured a police officer.

The prosecution’s investigation charged the group with bombing the area in front of the Belgium ambassador’s house in Egypt, seeking to harm Egyptian diplomatic relations, and distorting Egypt’s image abroad.

Additionally, the investigation revealed that the defendants funded four people belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood to place a bomb under a police vehicle in front Al-Talbiyia police station in Faisal district.

Since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi numerous people have received prison sentences on charges of committing terror attacks.

Government authorities launched a crackdown on Islamist organisations following Morsi’s ouster in 2013. The Brotherhood’s political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), was dissolved by court order last year.
