22 ‘Friday of the land’ protesters released

Qasr Al-Nil Misdemeanour Court released three children accused in the same case on bail

The Qasr Al-Nil Misdemeanour Court released on Wednesday 22 detainees who were arrested on 15 April during ‘Friday of the land’ protests.

Despite the defendants receiving a release order, they are still required to attend a court session in order to view photographs and testimonies from Metro and transportation authorities.

The detainees were accused of protesting without a permit, hindering public transportation, blocking roads, and threatening state security.

The prosecution had previously ordered their release but changed the order and scheduled a session for 18 April and renewed their detention for 4 days.

A judge in the same misdemeanour court released on Tuesday three children, accused in the same case, on EGP 3,000 bail.

The anti-government demonstrations were prompted by the maritime demarcation agreement that would see the transfer Egypt’s sovereign control of two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia.

The 25 April protests were followed by arbitrary arrests of bystanders, according to numerous testimonies. The arrests have been met with angry reactions from the Press Syndicate and the public.
