Another prisoner dies in detention in less than 48 hours

Family of detainee Mamdouh Shaldam says he suffered from Hepatitis C and was denied medical care for his condition

In less than two days, another detainee, Mamdouh Shaldam, died in an Egyptian prison, after falling into a coma which led to his death on Tuesday, according to his family.

Shaldam was detained in the Burj Al-Arab prison, where he was spending a 10-year prison sentence after being charged in a violence-related case in Alexandria in 2015.

Shaldam was a school teacher in Beheira and was arrested in March 2015. He was reported to have gone into a coma four days ago.

His family said he suffered from Hepatitis C and that prison authorities had denied him the necessary medical care and prevented the family from providing it themselves. The family said Shaldam required a weekly transfer of plasma cells to treat his condition.

The Ministry of Interior denied the accusation, adding that all prisoners in detention centres receive the required medical care.

Meanwhile, head of the El-Shebab Center for Human Rights, lawyer Khalaf Bayoumi, held the ministry responsible for Shaldam’s death, accusing it of “medical neglect” and not providing medical care to the prisoner.

On Monday, a prisoner named Hassan Al-Gamal, 56, died in detention after suffering a stroke, reportedly connected to kidney disease, in Mansoura prison in Daqahleya.

His wife said his family had made several demands for his release due to his deteriorating health, but each time they were refused.
