Google releases search database statistics for Egypt

2015's year in search: Suez Canal and electro chaabi among most searched terms

The release of Google’s annual search database statistics provided a snapshot in miniature of the year of 2015, in Egypt, with searches for electro chaabi and the Suez Canal among the most searched terms.

Saad Lamjarred ‘s song “Enta Me’lm” topped the list for most searched songs, followed by popular electro chaabi songs Mafesh Saheb Byetsaheb and Fartaka Fartaka. The controversial song, Seib Eidy, came in fourth, likely reflecting a younger demographic of Egyptians’ taste in music.

Despite Egypt’s unstable economic conditions, Google users in Egypt tended to search for films, TV shows, and music.

While there was a prominent interest in entertainment content, the inauguration of the Suez Canal also accounted for a large number of searches. Celebrity deaths also accounted for a large number of frequently searched-for terms, especially the passing of Faten Hamama, Omar Sharif, and Nour El-Sherif.

Continuing a trend from previous years, sports, especially football, accounted for a large portion of Egypt’s frequently searched terms, with Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian footballer who plays for the Italian club AS Roma, coming out as one of the most popular athletes.
