Emergency state in Hurghada to confront floods

21 drainage systems developed in Kafr El-Sheikh

By Sarah El-Sheikh

The Red Sea governor imposed an emergency state in Hurghada on Tuesday to prepare to deal with predicted heavy rains and floods.

The governorate coordinated with the central and maintenance crisis centres and created a path from the south of the city to the north to deal with any risks. It also coordinated with the health directorate and water and sewage companies to send ambulance cars and water suction cars to several areas.

Meanwhile, Kafr El-Sheikh governor Osama Hamdy said an international bank funded the implementation of drainage systems in 21 towns in the governorate with a total of EGP 255m.

A storm, dubbed the ‘El-Maknasa’ storm, began on Monday in Alexandria, Beheira and Kafr El-Sheikh, with heavy rains and thunderstorms that flooded the streets. The storm will last for four days.

The storm led to power cuts in a number of areas and cities in Beheira, and the shutting down of the Borollos port in Kafr El-Sheikh.

Meanwhile, the three governorates are still suffering the consequences of floods that occurred in early November.
