Shoukry heads to Algeria to discuss Libya

Shoukry will meet with Italian, Algerian counterparts to discuss solution, in third meeting of its kind

By Toqa Ezzidin

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry is headed to Algeria Sunday to meet his Algerian and Italian counterparts in a tripartite meeting to discuss the situation in Libya, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Aby Zeid.

Abu Zeid added that the meeting is held to discuss ways of supporting the establishment of a national unity government in the restive country.

Abu Zeid said this is the third meeting of its kind, held in Algeria due to its geographical location, whereby both Egypt and Algeria are directly affected by the security and political circumstances in Libya.

According to Abu Zeid, Shoukry will affirm the importance of reaching a solution between the different parties around establishing a national unity government, which can restore political balance within Libya.

Several Gulf and Western countries have pressured Libyan officials to find proper solutions to establish the government, as they consider it the only political solution that will restore stability to Libya.

Earlier last month, UN Special Envoy to Libya Bernardino Leon suggested a national unity government, headed by Fayez Al-Serag and three other deputies.

However, the internationally recognised Libyan government located in Tobruk rejected the proposal, citing the refusal to remove clauses that it said we added by the Islamist government in Tripoli without its knowledge.
