Police exchange fire with unknown assailants on Fayoum highway

Four policemen were wounded in incident, transferred to hospital

One day after a reported failed attempt on the life of Fayoum’s Security Director Nasser Al-Abd, unknown assailants fired at a police car along the Fayoum-Beni Suef road on Monday, wounding four policemen.

The Ministry of Interior said that after being fired at, the policemen exchanged fire with the assailants. The injured policemen included a captain and three other conscripts. They are currently undergoing medical treatment in hospital.

“Security forces are currently intensifying their efforts to arrest the perpetrators,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Revolutionary Punishment militant group is the most active group in the city, claiming attacks on policemen and officials. Fayoum has seen some of the worst violence, with attacks occurring on an almost weekly basis, leaving many injuries among police and security personnel.

On Sunday, the governorate’s Security Director Nasser Al-Abd said a sound bomb exploded near a security campaign which he was leading, with no injuries reported.

In May, the Revolutionary Punishment group also claimed responsibility for the killings of two police officers as part of an operation of “cleansing the country of murderers and criminals… [who] assault unarmed Egyptians in the streets and squares, torture detainees in police stations and cellars of the National Security apparatus, and kidnaps students from the exam rooms to murder them”.
