Morsi’s son released from prison after serving sentence

Former president’s son, Abdullah, was sentenced to a year in prison on drug abuse charges

The 20-year-old son of the ousted president Mohamed Morsi, Abdullah, was released from prison after serving a one year sentence in Tora prison.

Abdullah Morsi was released by Banha court on Tuesday. The business administration student was sentenced in July 2014 to a year in prison with labour and fined EGP 10,000 for drug abuse.

Morsi and a friend of his were arrested in March 2014 after they were reportedly found in possession of two cigarettes containing hashish, according to state media.

Hours after his release, the former Muslim Brotherhood leader’s son said on his Facebook page: “I walked today out of the wrongdoers.”

Abdullah added that “soon all the detainees and the aggrieved in Egypt will be released”.

Following the Brotherhood government’s removal, scores of the group’s top leaders and their relatives were arrested on charges of being members of the now outlawed group and also orchestrating “terrorist” attacks.
