3 UWK members released on bail

Ultras members were arrested on charges of belonging to a “terrorist entity” and attempting to topple Al-Sisi’s regime

Three Ultras White Knights (UWK) members were released on bail on Tuesday.

In April, five UWK fans, namely Mahmoud El-Domiati, Sayed Ali, Seif Kamel, Abdallah Ghoneim and Anas Tawfik, were arrested on charges of joining a “terrorist entity” and attempting to topple the regime of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

El-Domiati alongside Tawfik and Ghoneim were released on Tuesday. The trial for the other two  UWK members will take place on 2 August.

They were detained ounder the “terrorist entities” law, which was approved in February. The law defines any group “practicing or intending to advocate by any means to disturb public order or endanger the safety of the community and its interests or risk its security or harm national unity” as a terrorist entity.

Ultras fan groups became well known for their prominent role in the 25 January Revolution. They have also become known for their anti-police and anti-government slogans, and are often involved in clashes with security forces.

On 16 May, a court ruling brought into effect a ban on Ultras fan groups, and ordered that they should be dissolved.
