At this time four years ago, hundreds of thousands Egyptians took to the streets with various demands; an end to police brutality, bread, freedom, social justice, and eventually the fall of the regime. On 11 February, people celebrated in Tahrir Square after former president Hosni Mubarak stepped down.

Four years later, Mubarak and the top security aides of his regime have all been freed from charges, while there are anywhere between 10,000, according to the interior ministry, to 41,000 political detainees, according to activist databases such as Wiki Thawra.

Throughout the past four years, hundreds of protesters were killed in clashes with security forces during various demonstrations. The most recent would be the 31-year-old Shaima Al-Sabbagh and the 17-year-old Sondos Abu Bakr. Security forces reportedly shot Al-Sabbagh as they were dispersing a protest in Talaat Harb Square in downtown Cairo on Saturday. Police forces also reportedly Abu Bakr shot during the dispersal of a protest in Alexandria on Friday.
