A video, allegedly showing an injured Egyptian expatriate in Saudi Arabia, and which was posted on social media on Saturday has gone viral. The video shows the expatriate after he was verbally and physically assaulted by a Saudi police officer, according to eye witnesses.

The video goes on to show a street protest in the aftermath of the incident, in which a group of Egyptian expatriates demands that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and his government should intervene to protect their rights. Their chants included, “We want our rights”, “Long live Egypt”, “Hold your head up high, you are an Egyptian” and “Where are you Al-Sisi? I made you my President.”

The assault allegedly took place in front of the Al-Shohadaa’ Hotel in Mecca, which lies 150 metres from the Grand Mosque of Mecca. The video was posted by Cairo Portal, a local news website.

The Egyptian citizen who was allegedly assaulted was not identified. It remains unclear why the police purportedly attacked the man and there has been no official Saudi response to clarify the alleged incident.
