73 detainees referred to court

Defendants charged with joining illegal group and disturbing the public peace

The North Giza Prosecution has referred 73 detainees to the Giza Criminal Court. They were arrested for burning down a church in Kafr Hakim in Kerdasa, following the Rabaa Al-Adaweya sit-in dispersal in August 2013.

The defendants, according to state-run Al-Ahram members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, face several charges, including joining an illegal organisation, conspiring to overthrow the government, and undermining the public peace.

Muslim Brotherhood spokeswoman Wafaa El- Banna said that Brotherhood members did not burn down anything and that the real culprits “were thugs”. She added that no material evidence can be provided to prove that the Brotherhood was involved in this incident.

Brotherhood members have been on the run since the ousting of former president Mohamed Morsi in August 2013. In September, the Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, was referred to court as well for violence and terrorism, along with 104 Brotherhood members.
