Child dead, 6 injured in Matariya clashes

Cause of death still to be officially confirmed, says health ministry

An eight year-old child was killed Friday in the Cairo neighbourhood of Matariya, and six others were injured, amid clashes between local residents.

“Clearly, there are rubber bullets injuries all over the injured bodies, but the death cause is pending investigations,” said health ministry official Khaled Al Khateeb.

The body of the child, Abdel Rahman Ashraf, is currently being held at a morgue in Matariya.

Supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi took to the streets in Matariya following Friday prayers, the National Coalition Against the Coup said on their official Facebook page.

Located in the north-eastern region of Cairo, the Matariya neighbourhood has witnessed bloody clashes between Muslim Brotherhood supporters and police forces since the overthrow of Morsi in July 2013.

In August, three were killed in violent clashes that lasted for two consecutive days between police and protesters supporting Morsi.

Earlier this year, on the third anniversary of the 25 January Revolution, Matariya witnessed violent clashes between protesters and security forces. According to the Ministry of Health, clashes across Cairo and Giza lead to 49 deaths on that day, thirty of which took place in Matariya.
