An emergency drill at Aswan Airport ended in flames when a pilot lost control of an aircraft.

The emergency drill scenario was a technical malfunction of the aircraft’s left side landing gear on runway no 35/17, Said Abdel Ghaffer, manager of Aswan Airport, explained. However, things took a turn and the pilot lost control of the aircraft, veering off the runway about 100 metres into the sand. The aircraft’s left wing erupted in fire.

Ghaffer said the incident showed that the airport is quite prepared to take on any kind of emergency and the dedication of the workers showed through.

The airport conducted the emergency drill to assess how prepared the airport is to deal with a possible security threat, said Pilot Gad Al-Karim Nasr, CEO of Egyptian Airports Co. The airport usually conducts emergency drills twice a year.
