Egypt returns ambassador to Tunisia

Egypt’s ambassador returns to Tunis having been recalled two months ago over Tunisian president’s comments

Egypt’s ambassador to Tunisia has returned to Tunis after he was called back for consultation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following remarks made by Tunisian officials about Egypt in September.

Official spokesman for the ministry, Badr Abdelatty, confirmed that Ambassador Ayman Mashrafa returned to Tunisia to resume his duties as Egypt’s ambassador to Tunisia, according to state news agency MENA.

Mashrafa was recalled following statements made by Tunisian President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki at the United Nations General Assembly. He called on Egypt’s authorities to release ousted President Mohamed Morsi to ease tensions in Egypt. He also cited Egypt as an example of the difficulties of establishing democracy and civil institutions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Marzouki’s comments, which they called “not true”. The Egyptian presidency also criticised Maarzouki’s comments, hoping that Tunisia could actually benefit from Egypt’s experience.

Abdelatty said that by returning Egypt’s ambassador to Tunisia “we hope to settle things in the interests of the two countries and their peoples.”
