Army and police forces deploy in Al-Ayyat

Ministry of Interior spokesman says police forces controlled the situation, one suspect arrested

Police forces have controlled the situation in Al-Ayyat since their joint deployment in the village with the Armed Forces on early Tuesday morning, according to Ministry of Interior spokesman Hany Abdel Latif.

The southern-Giza village witnessed 48 hours of instability; clashes erupting on Sunday between two groups of thugs caused four deaths and 25 injuries.

Abdel Latif added that police forces arrested one suspect, and “the search is still on for the other suspects mentioned in the warrant issued by the prosecution.”

The ministry spokesman announced that a school building in the village will be used as a temporary police station, as the village’s police station was set on fire following the dispersal of Rabaa Al-Adaweya and Al-Nahda sit-ins on 14 August 2013.

Al-Ayyat residents called for civil disobedience on Tuesday to protest the security vacuum the village suffered since the dispersal. State-owned Al-Ahram reported that “life is gradually returning to the village.” According to a local resident, the planned civil disobedience was cancelled following the intervention of security forces.
