Al-Salam Misdemeanours Court issued three separate rulings on Tuesday finding Deputy Chairman of Al-Wasat Party Essam Sultan guilty of insulting former Prime Minister and presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq.

The court handed down three separate fines totalling EGP 40,000 each to Sultan. One case concerned comments made by Sultan on Al-Nas satellite channel and resulted in an EGP 10,000 fine and another for insulting Shafiq on Dream satellite channel also concluded with a  10,000 fine. The third case was for comments made by Sultan, insulting Shafiq during his tenure as prime minister in 2011, according to state-owned Al-Ahram, and resulted in an EGP 20,000 fine and EGP 10,050 in legal compensation.

 Sultan was arrested along with Al-Wasat Party Chairman Abou El-Ela Mady following former  President Mohamed Morsi’s ouster and is being investigated for inciting violence.

Shafiq, who was the runner up in last year’s presidential elections, left the country following his loss and has not returned due to charges he faces in Egypt.
