14 Qasr Al-Eini demonstrators charged with assaulting policeman

The demonstrators, all holders of technical diplomas, were arrested after protesting university enrollment rules

The Public Prosecution charged 14 demonstrators on Monday afternoon for assaulting a policeman during their Sunday protest in front of the Ministry of Higher Education on Qasr Al-Eini Street, according to their lawyer Ahmed Abdel Naby.

The protesters were also charged with threatening public peace, obstructing work in a governmental entity and blocking roads.

The prosecution is expected to issue their decision regarding the accused shortly.

Holders of Technical Diplomas demonstrated in front of the Ministry of Higher Education on Sunday, demanding they decrease the minimum grades for university enrollment and change enrollment coordination rules.

The Ministry of Interior said on Sunday that it had arrested 14 “rioters” on Qasr Al-Eini street.

According to the ministry, the demonstrators blocked Qasr Al-Eini street, and denied entrance to or departure from the ministry’s headquarters, prompting security forces to intervene and reopen the road, arresting 14 of the demonstrators.
