Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Cairo on Monday to meet with interim president Adly Mansour.

A source in the Palestinian embassy said Abbas and Mansour would discuss “many things” relating to “Egyptian-Palestinian relations.”

Ahmed El-Moslimany, media advisor to Mansour, said the pair discussed the issue of Palestinian unity, stressing that Egypt wants Fatah and Hamas to reconcile their differences and move forward.

This is Abbas’ first visit to Egypt since the armed forces intervened and removed Mohamed Morsi as president on 3 July.

Abbas recently agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “to formally resume direct final status negotiations,” said US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki on Sunday. US Secretary of State John Kerry invited both sides to send senior negotiating teams to hold talks in Washington DC on Monday and Tuesday.
