Unidentified gunmen fired live bullets at police check points in North Sinai Tuesday night, and also at an Army Check point close to Rafah International Airport early Wednesday morning.

According to eye witnesses, soldiers at the army check point returned fire and chased the gunmen. No injuries were reported.

The attack at the police check points led to several injuries; according to medical sources at the local Rafah Hospital, eight people were injured: two civilians, three army officers and three soldiers.

Also on Tuesday, security forces exchanged fire for half an hour with unidentified gunmen who attacked security headquarters in Rafah with heavy weaponry.

Major General Osama Ismail, deputy minister of interior for the Sinai region and Suez Canal, has gone to Sinai to follow up with the security updates in the region.

A group of youth from North Sinai have organised protests condemning the continuing violent attacks in Sinai, and called the army and police to enforce security.

Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya has also issued a statement condemning the violent attacks in Sinai, calling for the security of Egyptian civilians, police and army forces.
