Al-Wafd to investigate murder

Yamama assigned to investigative committee concerning murder of late politician’s elderly daughters

Chairman of Al-Wafd party, El-Sayed El-Badawi has expressed his sorrow for the death of the two daughters of late Al-Wafd leader Tawfik Andrawos.

Loody Andrawos, 79, and Sophie Andrawos, 82, were found dead in their palace in Luxor on Monday.  The police said the elderly women were both hit by a sharp object in the face. The main gate of the palace was broken.

Badawi assigned a legal committee to investigate the accident, led by Al-Wafd Supreme committee member Abdel Sanad Yamama.

Tawfik Andrawos was a prominent leader in Al-Wafd during the era of Sa’ad Zaghloul, in the early 20th century. He was also a member of the Egyptian Nation’s council, the former lower house of parliament.

The scene of the murder, the palace’s location is unique; next to the Temple of Luxor at the centre of the city. It also has political significance as it played host to a petition to support Zaghloul in 1919.

Yassin Tag El-Din, member of the Supreme Committee of Al-Wafd said the sisters had disputes with businessman Hussien Salem, who fled the country on corruption charges after the 25 January revolution.

Salem allegedly illegally appropriated areas of the sisters’ land to expand his hotel in Luxor, reported state agency MENA.

The sisters filed a lawsuit against Salem and his company later paid them compensation. The former ruling National Democratic party had also seized parts of their palace.
