Illicit Gains Authority to arrest Mubarak-era parliament speaker

Ahmad Fathi Sorour is wanted in connection with an investigation on his personal wealth.

The Ministry of Justice’s Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) issued a warrant for the former People’s Assembly speaker Ahmed Fathi Sorour for his failure to present himself for questioning. Fathi Sorour is wanted for questioning by the IGA which is investigating the wealth he accumulated during his 20 year tenure as the speaker under former President Hosni Mubarak.

Over the past week, Fathi Sorour was summoned twice to appear before the investigators for questioning but was apparently too ill to attend. The judge presiding over the investigation, Montaser Salah, postponed the hearing until last Sunday, which Fathi Sorour also failed to attend. The decision to issue a warrant for his arrest came shortly after.

Fathi Sorour, along with 23 other co-defendants, was acquitted last week of charges of incitement to murder protesters attempting to topple the Mubarak regime. His long career in the Mubarak regime first as Egypt’s minister of education, then as the speaker, has earned him a lot of criticism from Egyptians. His acquittal was met with fierce condemnation by the Muslim Brotherhood.
