Four men accused of attacking President Mohamed Morsy’s car as it left the presidential palace were acquitted by the Heliopolis misdemeanour court Saturday.

The men, who were part of a group of dozens protesting the killing of Egyptian soldiers on the border with Israel last month, were accused of attacking Morsy’s motorcade with rocks.

The judge, Gamal Hetta, acquitted all of them, citing a lack of evidence. He said the court did not see any evidence pointing towards the four men attacking the presidential car.

He added that the prosecution’s files did not specify who arrested the first defendant or the state he was in when he was arrested, which meant there was no proof he committed the act.

The defendants’ supporters, who had filled the courtroom with chants against “the rule of the [Muslims] Brotherhood” reversed their tune after the verdict, saying “the Brotherhood hadn’t gotten to the judiciary yet.”
