CAIRO: Internal bleeding and broken bones were declared the cause of death of a man said to have been tortured by a police officer last month, according to an autopsy report released by Egypt’s coroner and published by independent daily Al-Shorouk on Monday.

Ramzy Salah El-Din Mohamed died May 24 following an interrogation at the Boulaq El-Dakrour Police Station.

While a police investigation claimed that he was only sent to the hospital after he showed signs of fatigue, his family claims that he was tortured at the station then referred to the Boulaq El-Dakrour Hospital, where he died..

The Ministry of Interior later said in an official statement that Minister Mansour El-Essawy referred the case to the General Prosecution for investigation after press reports suggested torture as a possible cause of death.

“The ministry will take all legal and administrative action in case any violations were proven by the prosecution against citizens, out of the ministry’s respect for … the rule of law,” the statement read.
