CAIRO: A decision on the status of ousted president Hosni Mubarak’s detention is expected this week after he completes 45 days, the maximum period for remanding a defendant in custody pending investigations

According to the law, the 45 days cannot be extended without a ruling from the criminal court. If the defendant isn’t referred to court, the law stipulates his release.

In Mubarak’s case, the prosecution has to press charges by Wednesday or let the court decide on whether to extend his detention.

Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud discussed with Minister of Justice Abdel Aziz Al-Guindy whether or not Mubarak can be transferred to court.

Last week, the Prosecutor General renewed Mubarak’s detention for the third time.

Doctors at Sharm Al-Sheikh Hospital where Mubarak is held say the ousted president’s health is stable, but his morale is bad and that he is depressed.
