ROME: Four immigrants who have lived atop a 35-meter (115-foot) crane for two weeks to protest Italy’s immigration policies have climbed down.

The men climbed atop the crane in Brescia on Oct. 31 to demand residence permits. The ANSA and Apcom news agencies say they came down during a torrential rainfall Monday night after negotiations involving lawyers, Brescia church officials, union leaders and police.

Their legal fate wasn’t immediately clear. Five others climbed down earlier.
The men, from Pakistan, Morocco and Egypt, survived by sleeping in shifts and thanks to food hoisted up to them by supporters on the ground.

Italian law requires would-be immigrants to have jobs waiting for them in order to receive residence permits.
