CAIRO: Fifteen activists were detained early Monday in Alexandria while hanging posters calling upon citizens to sign the “Together for Change” petition.

The petition includes seven political reform demands outlined by the former Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and reform advocate Mohamed ElBaradei.

The Arab Network for Human Rights Information condemned the detention.

“Police allegedly detained them for threatening national security while the government welcomes posters supporting the nomination of the son of the President [Gamal Mubarak] in next year’s presidential elections,” ANHRI said in a statement.

“This is a doubled-standard policy,” the rights group said.

Gamal Eid, ANHRI director, said that he is waiting for detained activists to be transferred to the prosecution office to provide them with the necessary legal support.”

“It’s a shame that the government detains citizens who peacefully express their legitimate demands,” he said.
