AL-ARISH: Egyptian security officials say Bedouin tribesmen attacked a humanitarian convoy bound for Gaza after a shootout with police in the Sinai Peninsula.

The officials say the police went to a Bedouin village searching for a fugitive but that tribesmen opened fire at them. They say no one was hurt in the shootout, or in the subsequent Bedouin attack on the convoy that set three vehicles ablaze.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to speak to the media. They didn’t provide more details.

They say Sunday’s incidents forced a temporary closure of a nearby border crossing with Israel.

Sinai’s impoverished Bedouins complain of mistreatment by the government. Many make their living smuggling weapons, drugs and people into Israel.
