NAGOYA: Defending champions Brazil whipped wild card entrants Egypt for a fourth straight win to remain unbeaten in the World Grand Champions Cup men s volleyball tournament on Sunday.

The Beijing Olympic silver medalists, also the 2007 World Cup winners, powered their way through to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 victory in the six-team round robin competition.

Egypt played a very good match. Their number four (Ahmed Abdelhay) played one of his best games, so we had a tough time, said Brazilian coach Bernardo Rezende. His team take on Japan on Monday.

We were not in our best form and we know we must play better. It was good that we played against strong serves in order to be in better shape for tomorrow, because Japan also have hard serves, he added.

European champions Poland posted their first win this week when they defeated Asian runners-up Iran 25-23, 18-25, 28-26, 25-23.

Former champions Cuba kept their chances of regaining the title alive by beating Asian champions Japan 25-19, 25-20, 25-22.

Cuba and Japan have a 3-1 win-loss record, followed by Iran and Poland 1-3 and Egypt 0-4. On Monday, Cuba will play Iran while Japan will play Brazil on the tournament s final day. -AFP
