CAIRO: Egypt has received a refund worth more than $13 million for a “bad shipment of wheat from the United States, Minister of Trade and Industry Rashid Mohammed Rashid said Friday.

“Negotiations between the Egyptian Authority for Supply Commodities and the American firm which had sent Egypt a wheat shipment not fit for human consumption have been successful, Rashid told the official Mena news agency. The US firm has paid the authority $13.146 million, the price of the shipment, Rashid said.

The 60,000-ton shipment delivered by US firm ADM in May was rejected by Egyptian authorities, who sent the shipment back and threatened to review all contracts with the firm, Mena reported.

The US is a major supplier of wheat, corn, and soybean products to Egypt, almost all through commercial sales, according to the US State Department.

Egypt is traditionally the United States largest export market for wheat. Agricultural exports to Egypt average $1 billion a year.
