Peace process at forefront of Egypt-Palestine presidential summit in Cairo

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has met with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas, in Cairo on Monday, to discuss the latest developments regarding the Palestinian Cause and peace process in the Middle East.

During the meeting, President Al-Sisi affirmed Egypt’s support for the Palestinians and that the Palestinian Cause will remain a priority in his country’s politics. 

He emphasised the stability of the Egyptian position towards the Palestinian Cause, and the country’s full support for the Palestinian positions and choices towards a political settlement. 

Al-Sisi added that Egypt will continue its efforts to restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. He further noted that the current stage requires solidarity and intensification of all Arab efforts in order to resume the peace process negotiations.

The Palestinian leader affirmed the importance he attaches to consultation and coordination with his Egyptian counterpart regarding the situation in Palestine. This also concerns the determinants of the Palestinian position in light of the latest developments in the Cause, and the latest changes on the regional and international arenas.

Abbas expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s efforts and its historic and steady stances in support of the Palestinian cause. He noted that Egypt has also always worked to preserve the rights of his people, and to achieve Palestinian national unity.

The two presidents agreed to maintain intensive bilateral coordination on numerous matters of common interest, and to follow up on the resumption of negotiations.  

President Al-Sisi clarified that Egypt’s steps regarding its efforts to stabilise the situation in the Gaza Strip are always aimed at preserving the security and stability of the Palestinian people. They also aim to improve the humanitarian, living and economic conditions in the Strip.

He mentioned that Egypt is continuing its efforts to complete the reconciliation process and achieve political consensus as part of a unified vision between all Palestinian factions. Its ultimate goal is to achieve the unity of the Palestinian people.

The meeting came after Abbas’ meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman on Sunday.

President Al-Sisi and King Abdullah II met earlier to discuss the developments related to the Palestinian Cause. The two heads of state exchanged views on how to break the stalemate concerning the peace process in the Middle East, and advance efforts to resume negotiations.
