Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades in Nicosia, on Wednesday, to discuss the growing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Al-Sisi arrived in Nicosia for an official visit, on Wednesday morning, to take part in the eighth tripartite summit with his Greek and Cypriot counterparts.

During the meeting, the two Heads of State focused on discussing energy, as well as the tripartite cooperation between Egypt, Cyprus and Greece.

The Egyptian President praised the growing bilateral relations between Cairo and Nicosia, and the Cypriot support of Egypt at regional and international forums and organisations.

He also expressed Egypt’s keenness to continue boosting these relations, and intensify coordination regarding topics of mutual concern in both bilateral and tripartite level cooperation with Greece.

Both Al-Sisi and Anastasiades stressed the need to proceed with the implementation of joint projects that were agreed upon under the tripartite cooperation mechanism.

They hope that this mechanism could be a model for coordination and consultation between Mediterranean countries, and reflects the deep Egyptian-Cypriot relations.

On the summit’s agenda is the continuing Turkish aggressiveness regarding explorations within Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone and the decision to open the coastal front of Famagusta in violation of UN resolutions.

The Cyprus issue will also be a main topic. Sentonas said President Nicos Anastasiades will refer to the latest developments and express his readiness and determination to respond immediately to a fresh initiative by the UN Secretary General for a Cyprus settlement.

A joint declaration will be adopted, expressing the views of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt.
