President Al-Sisi receives letter of support on GERD from Congolese counterpart

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi received a letter, on Saturday, from President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, outlining support for the Egyptian position regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady said that Jean-Claude Kabongo, Advisor to the DRC President, delivered the letter on Saturday, which asserted his country’s aspiration to enhance bilateral relations with Egypt. The letter also said that the Democratic Republic of Congo wished to benefit from the Egyptian experience in the infrastructure field and major development projects.

President Al-Sisi expressed his appreciation of the DRC’s support regarding Egypt’s access to River Nile water, and said that Egypt welcomes all cooperation with fellow African countries, including access to the huge potential and rich resources available across the continent.

Al-Sisi also praised the bilateral relations of cooperation with the DRC in various fields, adding that Egypt is keen on supporting the DRC in various development and technical fields. The increased cooperation would see an added increase in the trade exchange rates between the two countries.

Kabongo also conveyed the President Tshisekedi’s appreciation of the Egyptian support for the DRC at all international and regional forums, and the various assistance it has provided. This includes the  the medical aid convoy Egypt sent to the DRC to address the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
